Mindfulness-based symptom management (MBSM) is an 8-week course with one retreat session. It was curated at the Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic in Canada (Monteiro et al., 2010). MBSM course intends to step away from the pathology paradigm of mental illness, that frames mindfulness as a viable way to "Fix" or manage mental illnesses without actually challenging and addressing the systems of capitalism and White [upper caste] cis heteronormative patriarchy that is responsible for the supposed mental illness (Purser, 2019).
Mindfulness from the view of the facilitator is a practice and invitation to ourselves to become present in our bodies and the happenings around us. The hope of leaning within is to gather awareness in our responses from the integration of various platforms - B- body, E- Emotions, S- Sensations, and T- Thoughts. Through the practice of building awareness, we also hope to become more informed and move into intentional living.

Guided meditations are part of retreat sessions where we engage in practices like being aware of our breath, conducting body scans, practicing affectionate breathing, and cultivating loving-kindness. These practices help us slow down and focus on the present moment. In our daily lives, we often go through tasks on autopilot, without paying attention to our intentions or how we approach them. Guided meditations offer skillful habits we can incorporate into our daily routine to become more intentional.
Engaging in mindful movements and connecting with our senses is a way to bring ourselves into the present moment when our thoughts carry us away. Thoughts naturally arise to make sense of our experiences and guide us through situations. However, we often find ourselves caught up in these thought patterns unnecessarily. By actively using our five senses, we can fully embrace our experiences and become more aware of how our bodies respond.
During mindful walking, we focus on our breath and synchronize it with our steps. This helps improve coordination and allows us to understand our body's abilities and agency as we engage in the activity.
An essential part of our mindfulness sessions is discussing and sharing our experiences with the practices. The goal is to articulate our experiences and add more language to understand 'what it is'. This helps us engage with our experiences based on their true nature rather than focusing on what they should or could have been."
